Jose Cobo was born in 1958 in Santander, Spain, and has lived in Madrid, Chicago, New York and Santander. He received his MFA Sculpture from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1985, and studied stone carving and mural painting at the Facultad de Bellas Artes San Fernando, and printmaking at the Circulo de Bellas Artes.
Cobo received the “II Beca de Artes Plasticas” de la Fundacion Marclino Botin award in 1994 and the Premio de las Bellas Artes de Cantabria award in 2014. He taught at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Universidad Internacional Menendez Pelayo, UIMP Master Course, and is a Member of the Academic Council of CESINE School of Design. He has been a Visiting Artist at Universidad del Pais Vasco, Bilbao, Indiana University, Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, SAIC-Ox-bow, and Vermont Studio Center. His solo exhibitions include: Maya Polsky Gallery (Chicago, USA); Galeria Buades (Madrid, Spain); Galeria Alejandro Sales (Barcelona, Spain); Galeria Ferran Cano (Palma de Mallorca, Spain); Jon Oulman Gallery (Minneapolis, USA); Fish Tank Gallery (New York, USA); Galerie Stefan Röpke (Cologne, Germany); 3Punts Gallery (Barcelona, Spain & Berlin, Germany); Gail Severn Gallery (Ketchum, USA); and Galerie von Braunbehrens (Munich, Germany). His work has been widely exhibited at art fairs including ARCO, Art Cologne, Art Brussels, ARTE FIERA, Art First Bologna, San Francisco International Art Exposition, Art Karlsruhe, PULSE, NY, Art Miami, Art Chicago, and Kunst 12 Zurich.
