New VSC Fellowships for African-American Artists and Writers
The Vermont Studio Center is pleased to announce a new fellowship opportunity for African-American artists. Renowned painter Katherine Porter will provide two visual artists and one writer a one-month residency in 2008.
The John Pavlis (pronounced PAHVliss) Fellowship Fund, named after Porter’s father, will solicit nominations from faculty at historically black colleges and universities. Though preference will be given to students or graduates from Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Fisk University, the selection committee will also consider qualified African-American artists from our VSC fellowship pool. Interested artists, as well as those nominated by their instructors, should submit a VSC application by June 15, 2008 to be considered for this year’s residencies.
Residents will be provided with a private studio and comfortable housing, three excellent meals daily, uninterrupted working time and space, and the fellowship of professional peers. They will also have the option of counsel from distinguished Visiting Artists and Writers.
Katherine Porter studied in Boston and Colorado and received honorary degrees from Colby and Bowdoin Colleges. She has shown twice in the Whitney Biennial and also had solo exhibitions at the David McKee Gallery in New York, Knoedler Gallery in London, and the Nina Nielsen Gallery in Boston. Her work is in the collections of the Metropolitan, MOMA, Whitney in New York, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Tel Aviv Museum in Jerusalem. She lives and works in Wisconsin and has been a long-time friend and visitor to the Vermont Studio Center.
