Crystal Wilkinson is the author of three works of fiction including most recently The Birds of Opulence which received the 2016 Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence. The novel also won the Appalachian Book of the Year and the Weatherford Award. Wilkinson’s second book, Water Street, was nominated for the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award and the Orange Prize (now the Women’s Prize for Fiction). Wilkinson was named a Southerner of the Year by Southern Living Magazine. She is an associate professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of Kentucky and her fiction has most recently appeared in Story, The Oxford American, The Kenyon Review, and Southern Cultures.
