Matthew Blackwell received his M.F.A. from The University of North Carolina. He received his B.F.A. from the Maine College of Art. In 1980 he received a full scholarship to Skowhegan.
He is represented by The Edward Thorp Gallery, in New York, where he has had 5 solo shows since 2005. Blackwell has also had solo shows at Pierogi Gallery and Valentine Gallery, in Brooklyn, and The John Davis Gallery in Hudson NY. Blackwell has been in over 60 group shows in New York, New England, the southwest, and overseas. He has received funded residencies to Yaddo; Vermont Studio Center; Sculpture Space, in Utica, N.Y.; and Triangle, in Brooklyn, NY. He has taught at The University of Southern Maine, Oberlin College, Fairfield University, Haverford College, LaGuardia Community College, and various other schools over the last 30 years.
Blackwell has lived and worked in South Williamsburg, Brooklyn since 1990. Previously he lived in Portland, Pownal, and Monhegan Island, Maine, as well as in Cleveland, Ohio.
