Sheila Pepe (b. 1959, Morristown, New Jersey) received a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art, attended the Haystack School, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and in 1994 received an MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Pepe has exhibited widely throughout the United States and abroad in solo and group exhibitions at venues including the Smith College Museum of Art, Northampton, Massachusetts, and the Weatherspoon Art Museum in Greensboro, North Carolina. Sheila Pepe: Hot Mess Formalism, a mid-career retrospective, was organized by the Phoenix Art Museum and travelled to the Everson Museum of Art and Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in 2018. Her work has been included in important group exhibitions such as the first Greater New York at PS1/MoMA; Hand + Made: The Performative Impulse in Art & Craft, Contemporary Art Museum Houston, Texas, and Queer Threads at the Leslie Lohman Museum of Lesbian and Gay Art in New York. Pepe was resident faculty at Skowhegan in 2013, and is a Core Critic in the Painting + Printmaking Department at Yale University.
