Pearl House is a landmark village house and barn that has been the “home away from home” for more than a thousand VSC artists and writers since 1991. The location and village character of this historic home have been an important contribution to VSC’s sense of place in northern Vermont for 28 years.
Inevitably, the decades and Vermont climate have taken a big toll on this beloved VSC building, and the time has come restore Pearl House to its rightful place as a historic jewel at VSC, and in the town of Johnson. We hope to begin the work in May.
The VSC Campus Master Plan calls for the comprehensive stabilization, preservation, and renovation of Pearl House to capture its full potential as a lasting place of shelter and comfort for the VSC community. In doing so, we pay tribute VSC’s enduring support of artists, and to the people and history of Johnson, Vermont.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Vermont Studio Center has been offered a generous matching challenge grant of $850K to raise the $1.7M needed to comprehensively rebuild Pearl House. This challenge is intended to spark a collective effort within the entire VSC community, and YOU are the key to reaching our goal! The challenge deadline is March 15th.
A remarkable $456K has already been raised toward this challenge (including 100% participation from the VSC trustees), leaving $394K to go to restore Pearl House to its original historic stature, and with the added value of modern durability, full first-floor accessibility, energy efficiency, and increased resident capacity and comfort.
All gifts will be matched 1:1 by the Pearl House Challenge. YOU—VSC alumni, Visiting Artists and Writers, staff, trustees, friends, donors, foundation partners, and Johnson and Vermont neighbors—can make this happen. Please join the challenge and give generously. This is a chance to see your gift DOUBLED!
The deadline for the Pearl Challenge gifts is March 15th, to begin construction in May.
